A two-vehicle crash south of Duluth killed an 11-year-old girl and sent her 15-year-old brother to the hospital, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 7:25 a.m. Friday on Carlton County Road 3 close to the intersection of Hwy. 45 near Cloquet, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the road was icy at the time of the wreck.

The siblings were in a vehicle being driven by the girl's mother, which went out of control and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 72-year-old Louise M. Jones, of Cloquet, the Sheriff's Office said.

The girl, Emma Loven, of Esko, was declared dead at the scene about 2½ miles north of her school, South Terrace Elementary. Her birthday was eight days earlier.

Emma's brother Alex was taken to a hospital for observation. The children's mother, 41-year-old Angela Loven, was treated for noncritical injuries. The Sheriff's Office has not disclosed what injuries, if any, Jones may have suffered.
