The second person who died in a north Minneapolis house fire last week was identified Wednesday.

Mary L. Thomas, 76, died from injuries suffered in the blaze on Nov. 23, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

The fire struck the wood-frame house in the 2100 block of Emerson Avenue N. shortly after midnight. Navia J. Walker, a 39-year-old resident of the home, died at the scene.

Thomas was taken from her home to Hennepin County Medical Center and died there Sunday afternoon, the medical examiner's office said.

The blaze started on the first floor; fire personnel pointed to a mattress in the dining room as its origin, according to a Fire Department report. Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said the fire was under control in about an hour. Its cause remains under investigation.

The two women were upstairs sleeping. Others in the house at the time were not hurt and received help from the Red Cross.

No smoke detectors were present in the area where the fire began, the report added.
