BCA identifies Washington County deputy who shot suicidal man
The Washington County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a suicidal man early Thursday in Lake Elmo has been identified.
Deputy Brian Krook, who has been with the Sheriff's Office for eight years, has been placed on standard administrative leave, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a news release Friday.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man Thursday afternoon as Benjamin W. Evans, 23, of Lake Elmo. Lori Hedican, chief investigator for the office, said no manner or cause of death has been determined.
According to the Sheriff's Office, authorities received a call at 12:09 a.m. Thursday reporting a suicidal male. Deputies found the man near Lake Elmo Avenue and 34th Street. He was armed with a handgun, the Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies began to talking with him in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the news release said. "At some point during the encounter, deputies used less lethal ammunition," it continued. "Later, one deputy discharged his firearm at the subject."
According to the BCA, Krook shot Evans multiple times.
Lifesaving efforts were administered at the scene. Evans was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was pronounced dead.
Body and dash cameras captured part of the incident.
The BCA recovered a handgun near Evans' body, as well as a beanbag shotgun that appeared not to have been fired.
