Block E ready for its renovation

My colleague Janet Moore wrote recently about plans to convert Block E into "Mayo Clinic Square," a combination basketball practice and sports medicine facility.

A recent submission to the city planning commission's committee of the whole details some architectural improvements to the building. The committee will discuss the project on Feb. 20.

Unlike the current structure, the new design will allow people to walk all the way through the building without traveling to the second floor, according to a staff report.

Starbucks, Jimmy Johns, Kieran's Irish Pub and the Shouthouse Dueling Piano Bar will staying the building.

Most of the first floor will be marketed toward retail and restaurant tenants. The second floor will contain retail and office tenants. The Timberwolves and the Mayo Clinic will have offices on the third floor of the building.

The staff report said that windows will be added to all three levels. Developers also plan to circle the building with a new sidewalk.

In their submission, developers included some before and after shots of what the building would look like from the street. We have cobbled them together into one image below:
