St. Paul police are investigating what they are calling a "suspicious death" after a man died early Tuesday in a park on the city's East Side.

Officers found the man with critical injuries on a baseball field near the Hazel Park Recreation Center shortly after 3 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Steve Linders, a police department spokesman.

"This is an active investigation," Linders said, noting that police are talking to people who live in the area and are hoping to obtain surveillance video.

An audio account posted on the Police Clips Facebook page indicated a caller heard two gunshots fired in the area of the 1800 block of Case Avenue and a woman screaming for help.

The victim, whose identity has not been confirmed, was taken to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office where the exact cause of death will be determined, Linders said.

Few other details were available Tuesday, but Linders called the death "suspicious."

Authorities said that they did not believe there was a safety threat to the public. No arrests have been made.
