Pentair PLC has acquired the Denmark-based carbon dioxide filtration firm Union Engineering A/S for an undisclosed price, officials announced Tuesday.

The addition is expected to expand Pentair's offerings within the industrial gas, food and beverage and biogas-upgrading sectors.

"Union Engineering's solutions and services will provide customers greater access to innovative [carbon capturing] solutions and a wider and complementary product portfolio," said Daniel Stirpe, Pentair's vice president of process technologies.

By adding Union Engineering, Pentair will gain Union's 185 employees and sales offices in China, Brazil and the United States.

Pentair, which is headquartered in England, but largely managed from Golden Valley, reported fourth-quarter and full-year 2016 results Tuesday. Including the soon-to-be-discontinued Valves and Controls business, the maker of industrial pumps and water filtration systems for homes, pools and factories saw total fourth-quarter sales fall 8 percent to $1.19 billion, which missed analysts' expectations of $1.21 billion.

Earnings, however, rose to $131 million, or 71 cents a share, compared with a loss of $454 million, or $2.52 a share, for the same quarter one year ago.

Pentair announced in August that it will soon sell the Valves and Controls business to Emerson for $3.15 billion. Excluding that business, Pentair reported adjusted earnings of 78 cents per share. While down from 88 cents in the year-ago quarter, adjusted results still beat the 73 cents forecast by analysts.

For the full-year 2016, Pentair reported sales of $4.9 billion, up from $4.6 billion as revenue from water quality and technical solution products rose. Results were partly offset by declining flow and filtration product sales. Full-year profits rose to $522 million or $2.88 a share, up significantly from a year ago.

Pentair said it expects 2017 earnings to reach $3.03 to $3.13 a share and for sales to fall 3 percent to $4.7 billion. Excluding one time items, adjusted earnings are expected to reach $3.45 to $3.55 a share, officials said.
