A longtime "trusted employee" for a Twin Cities medical supplier stole more than $1 million from the company over several years, according to charges.

Stephanie R. Davis, 37, of Maple Grove, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with 10 counts of theft by swindle, County Attorney Mike Freeman announced last week.

Once executives with Reliable Medical Supply in Brooklyn Park notified Davis that she was fired, she and her husband started removing snowmobiles, cars, boats and other items from their home, according to prosecutors.

Davis, who is due in court next week, is accused of stealing nearly $1.1 million from February 2011 through the end of last year, the charges said.

That time frame is as far back as the statute of limitations allows. Prosecutors contend a company audit revealed that she embezzled about $1.7 million over a 10-year span.

"This was a sophisticated scheme carried out by a trusted employee," Freeman said. "We will work to convict her, get her some prison time and push for restitution for the company."

A telephone message was left at Davis' home Monday seeking a response to the allegations.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police were called to Reliable Medical Supply on Jan. 12 when the company discovered two checks that had been paid from the company account but did not show up as payables in the company records.

Reliable Medical's chief financial officer asked Davis, who had worked as the company's accounts payable clerk since 2000, about the discrepancy, and she admitted she had been forging checks to herself from the company's business account. She was fired immediately.

The company has sued Davis in an effort to recoup the money
