Gophers freshman Gable Steveson took over the No. 1 spot in InterMat's NCAA heavyweight wrestling rankings on Tuesday, after improving to 20-0 last weekend against Iowa.

Steveson, a four-time state champion at Apple Valley High School, was ranked No. 2 nationally last week, when the top spot was still held by Iowa's Sam Stoll, a senior from Kasson, Minn.

Stoll has been injured and was unable to wrestle Steveson in Iowa's 24-10 victory over the Gophers on Saturday at Maturi Pavilion.

Steveson has made it clear that his goal is to be a four-time undefeated NCAA champion. Oklahoma State's Derek White is the No. 2 ranked heavyweight now, and Steveson beat him with an 8-2 decision in November.

Robson, McLaughlin honored

Gophers goalie Mat Robson was named the NCAA's Third Star of the Week and the Big Ten's First Star of the Week after stopping 76 of 78 shots in the sweep of then-No. 9 Notre Dame.

Blake McLaughlin, a freshman forward, earned the Big Ten's Second Star of the Week award after scoring the game-winning goal for the Gophers in both those games at Notre Dame.
