An 82-year-old man from Hibbing, Minn., was killed Tuesday morning when his pickup was hit broadside by a semitrailer truck in St. Louis County.

The crash happened about 9 a.m., as George E. Nelson was headed west on Hwy. 169 and made a left turn on Hwy. 73, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Nelson was broadsided by the eastbound semi as he eased into the turn.

Nelson was not wearing his seat belt, the patrol said. He died at the scene.

The 32-year-old semi driver, of Chisholm, Minn., was not injured.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, the patrol said.
