Developer Sherman Associates has shared more details for the mixed-use project it wants to build on a parking lot in downtown Minneapolis.

Thrivent wants to construct a 12-story, 152-unit apartment building along with a 10-story, 133-room hotel on the southern half of a parking lot on 7th Street between 5th and Portland avenues where Thrivent Financial plans to build its new headquarters.

A two-story podium, with a day-care center on the ground level and a fitness facility on the skyway level, will connect the buildings. A two-level underground parking garage is also part of the plan. A central court that Sherman's development will share with Thrivent will be used by both pedestrians and drivers.

Detailed renderings and plans were submitted to the city for discussion at next Tuesday's meeting of the planning commission's committee of the whole.

Sherman, which plans to open an extended-stay hotel, has submitted an application for a hotel brand, but nothing has been finalized yet, said Shane LaFave, director of multifamily development at Sherman.

Vikings to host ribbon cutting at practice center in Eagan

The Minnesota Vikings will cut the ribbon for their new Eagan practice facility on Friday.

The team has moved from its old facilities in Eden Prairie to the new Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center and outdoor stadium.

Vikings owners Mark, Zygi and Leonard Wilf along with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Gov. Mark Dayton are expected to attend the ceremony.

The new 40-acre headquarters is a piece of a larger 200-acre Vikings Lakes development, which is to include office, retail and housing.
