A woman was taken to a hospital Wednesday evening after a standoff in Eagan that closed a portion of Hwy. 3 for a couple of hours.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Eagan police received a 911 call reporting that a woman trying to harm herself by inhaling carbon monoxide in a garage in the 4600 block of Tamie Avenue. The woman also allegedly pointed a gun toward her mouth, Eagan police said in a news release.

Before police arrived at the home, the woman left in a car and crashed near the intersection of Cliff Road and Hwy. 3. When officers arrived, they saw her and a handgun inside the car.

"Because the woman was armed and suicidal, for precautionary measures, traffic was rerouted around the Highway 3 and Cliff Road intersection," police said in the statement.

At 5:11 p.m., police tweeted: "Hwy. 3 remains closed as negotiations continue with vehicle occupant with a possible firearm."

The woman refused commands from officers to leave her car, police said.

After three hours of negotiating with the woman, she threw the handgun outside the car, stepped outside the vehicle and was arrested without incident.

The woman was taken to Fairview Riverside Hospital in Minneapolis.

Roads reopened at 7:15 p.m. and police tweeted shortly after: "Everyone is OK!"
