A 36-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to running over and killing a teenage pedestrian last September in north Minneapolis.

Howard William Amos pleaded guilty to one count of fleeing police in a motor vehicle, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Diana I. Garcia-Alvarado of Phoenix, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.

According to the criminal complaint, it was shortly before 10 p.m. on Sept. 2 when Minneapolis police saw Amos' SUV speeding, driving over the center median at 33rd Avenue N., then continuing north on Emerson Avenue N.

When officers tried to pull Amos over, he ran a stop sign at 34th Avenue N.

The victim's boyfriend told police that they were walking home when they heard sirens and saw a vehicle with its lights off coming toward them as they stood on the median of the roundabout at 36th and Emerson, according to a news release from the county attorney's office.

Garcia-Alvarado got frightened, ran across the street and stopped on a curb as Amos' vehicle hit the roundabout and struck her.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died a short time later. Doctors said that she was about 12 weeks pregnant.

Amos is expected to be sentenced to 20 years in prison.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 7.
