A 26-year-old male inmate died in an apparent suicide Saturday at the Hennepin County jail in downtown Minneapolis, authorities said.

Deputies found the man unresponsive around 11:15 a.m. during a routine cell check, according to a news release from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

They began CPR, but the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics less than an hour later.

The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested by Minneapolis police on a warrant from Wisconsin. He had been held without bail since Tuesday night and was awaiting extradition to Wisconsin to face charges there. Officials declined to elaborate.

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office will release the inmate's name and official cause of death.

Upon entry to the jail, each inmate is screened for mental illness. It remains unclear whether the inmate who died Saturday suffered from any mental health issues.
