It was another all-nighter for Minnesota Department of Transportation crews but they finished repairs on the Stillwater Lift Bridge and opened it to traffic early Thursday morning.

MnDOT shut down the bridge around 10 p.m. Wednesday night to install a new power cable on the 80-year-old bridge connecting Stillwater and western Wisconsin. The cable replaced one that burned out Tuesday and left the bridge unoperable.

MnDOT made a temporary fix overnight Tuesday to Wednesday and made the permanent fix Wednesday night, said spokesman Kent Barnard.

On Tuesday, a malfunction in an electrical meter socket that monitors power usage on the bridge failed at 12:05 p.m. That left the bridge stuck abut 30 feet above the St. Croix River.

Crews thought the problem was fixed around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, but during testing, the bridge stalled again and workers had to be lowered from the lift span by bucket truck, Barnard said.

MnDOT worked through the night to get the bridge open for Wednesday's commute. They did the same thing to get the bridge open for Thursday. It reopened about 4:30 a.m. Thursday
