The Minnesota State Patrol has released the name of a woman killed Saturday in western Minnesota's Big Stone County when the motorcycle she was a passenger on hit a deer and spun around, ejecting both her and the driver.

Karen Kay Oakes, 56, of Ortonville, was killed just before 4 p.m. Saturday when the 2014 Harley-Davidson being driven by her husband, Thomas John Oakes, 57, hit the deer on Hwy. 7 near Eternal Springs Road. Thomas Oakes was taken to the Ortonville hospital with noncritical injuries.

Neither was wearing a helmet, the patrol said. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, it added.
