A limousine driver ran over and severely hurt a man who was trying to cross a well-traveled street in the middle of the night early Sunday northwest of the Twin Cities, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 2:20 a.m. on Hwy. 10 near 168th Street NW. in Big Lake, according to the State Patrol.

Daniel R. Martin, 29, of Zimmerman, was taken by air ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, the patrol said.

Martin's injuries were initially considered life-threatening. A hospital spokesman said later Sunday that the man's condition was upgraded to fair.

Robert T. Nowak, 47, of Big Lake, was heading west on Hwy. 10 when he struck Martin.

The patrol's report said Nowak was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Whether Martin had been drinking at the time was unknown, according to a synopsis of the crash by the patrol.
