A Central High School student was taken to a hospital Monday afternoon after experiencing a medical emergency, according to school and fire officials.
St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said the fire department was dispatched to the school about 1:15 p.m. and found someone in cardiac arrest. The person was treated at the scene and transported to Regions Hospital.
Zaccard said he could not disclose details due to federal privacy protections.
St. Paul police Sgt. Mike Ernster, a department spokesman, said the incident was not a criminal matter, and that his department was not involved.
Central High School Principal Mary Mackbee sent a letter about the incident to parents Monday after school ended.
"Sadly, a student experienced a serious medical emergency at school this afternoon," Mackbee said. "Staff responded immediately by calling emergency personnel and the student was transported to the hospital. We have talked to the family and will be working to support them during this difficult time."
After-school activities were canceled. A crisis support team was on the scene, according to a district spokeswoman.
Mackbee's letter said the crisis support team of social workers and counselors will also be available to students and staff beginning Tuesday.
Mackbee cautioned parents to be careful about the information they may hear about the incident.
"There are a lot of rumors about what happened today and I urge you to encourage your child to respect the family's privacy," she said.
Mackbee urged parents to talk to their children and look out for any changes in behavior.
The Facebook page Police Clips reported that the student was reported not breathing in or near the locker room on the west side of the building.
