Lynx still working to get Asjha Jones healthy

Recently-acquired veteran could miss opening night

May 28, 2015 at 8:49PM

Now don't start thinking about jinxes or anything, but a strange thing happened during the Lynx's media day today at their new practice facility.

One of their brand-spanking-new backboards cracked up.

Just like that, with no warning. All of a sudden there was a loud sound, a bang, and the backboard was all cracked up. It's not really a big deal, but it kind of is, considering the team needs to practice over the next few days, and the other court is going to be used, at least Friday, for Timberwolves pre-draft workouts.

We'll see how that all works out. Meanwhile, here are some nuggets from media day:

--Coach Cheryl Reeve said recently-acquired post player Asjha Jones, who has been battling a blood deficiency since it was discovered during a pre-training camp physical, won't play in Monday's preseason game at Target Center and might not play in the regular season opener a week from Friday against Tulsa.

This IS a pretty big deal, considering Jones was acquired to fill the void in the lineup created when Janel McCarville decided not to play this summer.

"I don't' know what to expect," Reeve said. "As a coach, we're still gathering information. I take it day-by-day.''

Jones had been easing into more and more practice time, but Reeve said the team has been backing off in that regard, too.

--The Lynx, likely limited to an 11-player roster due to cap limitations, are committed to keeping five big posts. That means, after Jones, Rebekkah Brunson and Damiris Dantas, it looks like Amber Harris, rookie Reshanda Gray and Devereaux Peters will likely be competing for two spots. At the small forward position Shae Kelley and Asia Taylor will be competing for a spot. That leaves four spots for backcourt positions.

That's about all for now. Have a good day.
