A collision between two full-size pickup trucks Tuesday morning in Elk River left one man dead and another person with severe injuries, police said.

A 16-year old believed to be from St. Michael who was driving the other pickup was extricated from the twisted metal and airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, said Capt. Bob Kluntz of the Elk River Police Department.
It was not immediately clear what led to the crash, but the vehicles appeared to have hit head-on, Kluntz said.
Road conditions appeared to be normal at the time of the crash.
There were no witnesses to the crash.
Commuters who happened upon the wreck not far from Cleveland Road called authorities, Kluntz said.
The intersection of Cleveland and Twin Lakes Road was closed for a couple of hours while investigators tried to determine the cause of the accident.

The pilot was the only person inside the plane, and was not injured in the emergency landing, according to the State Patrol.
