St. Paul police are investigating the death of a man found outside on New Year's Day in the Summit-University neighborhood.

Police were called to the 700 block of Aurora Avenue about 11:30 a.m. for an unresponsive man, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a police spokesman. Paramedics also responded, and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Ernster declined to say whether police are treating the case as suspicious.

"He was found outside exposed to the conditions," he said.

The man's name, cause of death and the circumstances are under investigation, he said.

Lori Hedican, chief investigator for the Ramsey County medical examiner's office, said the autopsy will be delayed until Wednesday because of "exposure."

According to the National Weather Service, air temperatures as recorded at the St. Paul Downtown Airport ranged from 10 to 13 below between 11:53 p.m. Dec. 31 and 8 a.m. Jan. 1. Windchill was consistently about 30 below during that time.
