Martin Luther King Jr. Day events around the Twin Cities

A few of Monday's events around the region.

7 a.m., Armory, 500 S. 6th St. Annual MLK Holiday Breakfast. Proceeds will benefit the Minneapolis chapter of UNCF. Actor David Oyelowo ("Selma") will speak and Sounds of Blackness will perform. This sold-out event will be broadcast at 8 a.m. on Twin Cities Public Television and streamed online, as well as broadcast live at many colleges and churches in the state.

11 a.m.-2 p.m., Powderhorn Recreation Center, 3400 15th Av. S. Community celebration featuring local performers, artists and a community meal. Food donations will benefit the Aliveness Project and Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative.

3-4 p.m., Central Gym, 3416 4th Av. S. Celebration featuring music, dance, a speaker and food. Free and open to the public.

6:30-7:30 p.m., Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 4055 Nicollet Av. S. Celebration featuring speaker Toki Wright and entertainment by Sta Fruit. Free and open to the public.

7-10 p.m., Innovation Artist Laboratories, 609 S. 10th St. A conversation about Afrocentric art in the Twin Cities led by Ta-coumba Aiken. Free.

St. Anthony

9 a.m., Nativity Lutheran Church, 3312 Silver Lake Road NE. Citizens host second annual "Our Community, Our Time, An MLK Day Celebration," a collaboration by Nativity Lutheran Church, Abu-Huraira Islamic Center, St. Anthony Village High School's Dare 2 Be Real Club and Thrivent Financial Services.

St. Peter

10 a.m., Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College. Civil rights leader and sociologist Joyce Ladner speaks on "The Civil Rights Movement, Still Marching After All These Years." Free and open to the public.

10 a.m.-5 p.m., Minnesota History Center special open hours. See exhibits and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. take part in a service project packing personal hygiene and cold weather kits for Catholic Charities.

9 a.m., Luther Seminary, Olson Campus Center, 1490 Fulham St. "Not a Myth but a Man" speech by the Rev. Kenneth Wheeler. 11 a.m., worship service. Noon, community lunch. Free and open to the public.

9 a.m.-noon. 32nd annual Governor's Council MLK Day Celebration featuring Minnesota State Capitol youth rally at 9 a.m. and program at Ordway Center, 345 Washington St., at 10 a.m. The theme this year is: "Life's most persistent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " Gov. Mark Dayton will host his final MLK Day event. Featured will be St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and state Rep. Ilhan Omar, DFL-Minneapolis, with music by Stokley Williams and Maria Isa.

7-9 p.m. "At the River I Stand" screening and discussion. East Side Freedom Library, 1105 Greenbrier St. Screening of award-winning documentary about the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike, during which King was assassinated. Free and open to all.
