The Gophers landed a coveted recruit from Minneapolis North on Sunday, when Tyler Johnson announced he would be staying home and playing football at Minnesota.
Minneapolis North's Tyler Johnson commits to Gophers football team
Johnson plays quarterback for North and is a multitalented athlete who could wind up playing safety or receiver in college. A consensus three-star recruit, he also had reported offers from Iowa, Wisconsin and Iowa State. The 6-2, 180-pound Johnson also is a standout basketball player.
Rivals.com ranks Johnson as the No. 2 recruit from Minnesota, behind Eden Prairie linebacker Carter Coughlin, who committed to the Gophers this spring.
The Gophers have 18 commitments for the class of 2016, including nine from Minnesota. Other in-state recruits include: Jojo Garcia, Sam Schlueter, Phillip Howard, Drew Hmielewski, Kamal Martin, Thomas Barber, Matt Kegel and Conner Olson.
Johnson announced his commitment on Twitter (@t_muhneyy10): "Thank you to all of the colleges that recruited me. But I'm excited to announce my commitment to the University of Minnesota to further my education and football career."
