Class AAA Rochester righthander Jake Reed pitched only 38 innings last season because of a lat strain suffered when he pitched for the Red Wings against the Twins in the final exhibition game of spring training. He was healthy this spring and in line to contribute.
But Reed has been placed on the DL at Rochester with right shoulder impingement syndrome. That doesn't sound good, does it? I'm waiting to receive more details on the injury, but it looks like Reed is going to be out for awhile - again.
Some other details from the minors:
Infielder Luis Arraez is back. He was limited to three games last season because of a torn right ACL but was in the lineup for Class A Fort Myers on Thursday, going 0-for-4. Arraez, signed by the Twins in 2013, has a career .338 batting average in the minors and batted .347 in 2016 in his last full season. A second baseman, Arraez doesn't hit for power but makes contact.
Lefthander Tyler Jay, the sixth overall pick in 2015, should return to action within the next few days. He threw 1.2 scoreless innings before being sidelined with a mild groin strain.
Shortstop Wander Javier, one the top prospects in the organization, has been slowed since mid-March with a sore shoulder. But he is now playing in extended spring training games and making progress. The Twins toyed with the idea of playing him and Royce Lewis, last year's first overall pick, at Class A Cedar Rapids together. They thought about having one DH or play second base a couple days a week while the other plays short. Javier's injury forced those talked to be tabled.
Now the Twins could keep Javier at extended spring training and see if Lewis plays himself up to High-A Fort Myers. So far, he's batting .261 with a .370 OBP.
