Gartner, Ludwig Broderick, Jr. Age 76, a retired attorney, avid golfer, and incomparable storyteller, died March 6 at his home in Naples, FL, of natural causes. Lud was born July 30, 1940 to Ludwig B. Gartner, Sr. and Elizabeth (Betty) Gartner of Preston, MN. He was a 1958 graduate of Preston High School, where he lettered in football and track. In 1962, he graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, resulting in a lifelong devotion to Notre Dame football, and in 1965 he graduated from Harvard Law School. He was a prominent litigator in Minneapolis for over 35 years, first at the law firm formerly known as Faegre & Benson, and then as a founding partner of Gartner & Schupp, P.A. He retired at age 60 to pursue his true passion, golf. He enjoyed golfing all over the world, especially at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, the Wilderness Country Club in Naples, and in Scotland. Lud was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Judith Rubinow Gartner, and brother, Michael Gartner. Survivors include brother, Jerome Gartner of Omaha, NE; sisters, Phyllis Kokesh of Fountain Hills, AZ and Mimi Pooler of Rochester, MN; daughters, Rachel Gartner Lennie of Bethesda, MD and Dr. Anne Gartner of Chapel Hill, NC; and 4 grandchildren. A memorial service in Minneapolis will be held later in the year. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evans Scholars Foundation or the American Civil Liberties Union.
