While we still don't know who will start at quarterback for the Gophers this season, we do know that one of their nonconference opponents is going through its own quarterback situation.
Last week, Oregon State coach Gary Andersen announced junior college transfer Jake Luton will be the Beavers' starter for their Aug. 26 opener at Colorado State. On Sunday, Marcus McMaryion, who started the final six games of 2016, announced he is transferring. McMaryion, a junior in eligibility, already has graduated and will be eligible to play immediately at whichever school he lands.
The Gophers play Oregon State on Sept. 9 in Corvallis, Ore. It will be the Beavers' third game of the season. They play host to Portland State on Sept. 2.
"Marcus has contributed much to our program on and off the field during his time here," Andersen said in a statement. "We support him in his decision and wish him well as he continues his career on the field and in his studies."
Luton, a 6-7, 234-pound junior, passed for 3,551 yards and 40 touchdowns last season for Ventura (Calif.) College. He began his career at Idaho, where he played four games as a redshirt freshman in 2015.
Backing up Luton will be senior Darell Garretson, who started the first six games of 2016 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. In the Beavers' 30-23 loss to the Gophers in last year's season opener at TCF Bank Stadium, Garretson completed 25 of 40 passes for 228 yards and three TDs.
