A pickup truck struck an electrical pole early Thursday near Ely, and a man who got out of the vehicle came in contact with a live wire and was fatally shocked.
Pickup crashes into electric pole near Ely; man fatally shocked by downed live wire
The crash occurred on Hwy. 21 and Moss Ridge Road, about a mile south of Ely, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
Jacob Forsman, 21, of Ely, was killed. The other person in the pickup, 22-year-old Carter Manning, of Beaver Bay, Minn., was taken to a hospital in Ely with unspecified injuries.
Authorities have yet to confirm which man was driving the pickup.
The vehicle was heading toward Ely about 12:45 a.m., left the highway, rolled into a ditch and hit a power pole, the sheriff's office said.
It was then that Forsman exited the pickup and "came into contact with a live electrical wire," leaving him dead at the scene, a sheriff's statement read.
Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Borchers said Forsman either "stepped close to or onto the wire. It was raining, and the current easily could have transferred" through the water.
