Builder Mortenson has a new project that is closer to home than ever
M.A. Mortenson Co. has been so busy developing other projects that it is outgrowing its Golden Valley headquarters.
The company is now pursuing plans for its own campus expansion at 700 Meadow Lane N., that will include demolishing a two-story parking ramp and replacing it with a four-story ramp, and a potential six-story office structure next to its existing two office buildings.
Golden Valley's Planning Commission approved the developer's initial plans earlier this month.
The plans will increase parking options from about 490 to 1,100 spaces in the first expansion phase, according to documents submitted to the city. Mortenson hopes to build the 98,000-square-foot office building in a future phase.
The company is also considering a potential third phase of development. It would add an extra two floors onto the new office building, bringing the total floor count to eight, according to the documents.
Mortenson's headquarters are visible from Olson Highway. The company is nearly done with its latest high-profile project, U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, and is also involved in the update of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It was recently selected to build the new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks.
"In the last few years, Mortenson has grown considerably. As such, we are outgrowing the current footprint at our Golden Valley headquarters and have begun work exploring expansion options on our campus," Mortenson President Dan Johnson said in a statement.
The City Council will vote on the application on June 7. But Johnson said Mortenson does not have "a definitive timeline for construction."
