The website www.womensbasketball247.com reported this morning that four Lynx--Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles--will be on the 12-player roster for the Rio Olympics.
Report: Four Lynx players on Olympic basketball team
Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles are said to be on 12-member women's roster for Rio, which will be announced Wednesday.
USA Basketball will make the roster announcement Wednesday. Colleague Kent Youngblood tweeted that Whalen, Moore and Fowles had excused absences from the Lynx's practice today; the team didn't explain why, he said, but that lends credence to the report. Augustus still is playing with Dynamo Kursk in Russia.
Women's Basketball 24.7 is a news and information website run by Phoenix Mercury forward Monique Currie. Citing unidentified sources, it said these 12 players will be named Wednesday, from a pool of 25 finalists:
Whalen, Augustus, Moore, Fowles (Lynx); Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner (Phoenix); Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart (Seattle); Tamika Catchings (Indiana); Tina Charles (New York); Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta); Elena Delle Donne (Chicago)
All but Griner, Stewart and Delle Donne were on the 2012 Olympic team that won gold in London.
Two-time Olympian Candace Parker of Los Angeles confirmed via Twitter today that she will not be part of the team, saying she was "surprised and disappointed" to be left off the roster.
Record numbers of basketball fans filled arenas to watch the rookie seasons of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese unfold. Simone Biles captivated the world at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Coco Gauff made women's tennis history.
