If your NFL mock draft has the Vikings selecting a receiver at No. 23, their general manager just said hold your horses, fellas.
Spielman has gotten two calls from teams looking to move up to No. 23
The Vikings general manager said: "We're going to have to make some determinations, and usually those determinations aren't made until we're actually on the clock."
"As I sit there, I enjoy reading the mock drafts and everybody out there trying to determine what we're going to do, we are in a position to take the best player," Rick Spielman said during his annual pre-draft press conference a little while ago. "I'm sure I'll get a receiver question here, but we are not honed in on a receiver in the first round. We'll look at the best potential player, regardless of position."
Spielman went on to remind reporters that Stefon Diggs, their best receiver in 2015, came out of the fifth round a year ago. Later, Spielman revealed that he might not even keep the 23rd pick.
"It will be interesting at the 23rd pick because I've already had two calls that I can verify today about teams potentially coming up our way," Spielman said. "And one may be potentially in the second round. So we're going to have to make some determinations, and usually those determinations aren't made until we're actually on the clock. One, who's available there? Is he too good to pass up? Two, what is the depth behind that position so if we do pass him up, do we have another swing at a guy at that same position in the second round? Or, three, don't move out of the first round because of that fifth-year option. Maybe try to move down in the first round and still get a player that you feel very excited to get."
Spielman went on to clarify that one of the inquiries for the 23rd pick was from a team looking to move up from the bottom of the first round, while the other was from a team looking to move up from the second round.
Obviously, for competitive reasons, Spielman didn't name the teams. But he did admit to being intrigued.
"I'm always intrigued," he said.
Mike Conley was in Minneapolis, where he sounded the Gjallarhorn at the Vikings game, on Sunday during the robbery.
