Gophers sophomore Nina Horvath won the weight throw at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse with a personal-best distance of 63 feet, 8¾ inches, the sixth best in program history.

For the second year in a row, Minnesota's Erin Hawkins won the 200-meter dash (24:87) and Heta Tuuri the high jump (5-9¼). Teammate Kimberly Golding set a meet record in winning the 60 hurdles (8.20). Minnesota women also won four other events.

On the men's side, Nate Roese of the Gophers won the 600 (1:17.97) after winning the 400 last year.

U swimmers sweep double dual

The Gophers men's swimming team swept a two-day, double dual meet with Purdue and Northwestern in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday, eclipsing six NCAA "B" cuts (provisional) in the process. Minnesota defeated the Boilermakers 195-56 and the Wildcats 265-85.

Among those getting "B" cuts were Bowe Becker in winning the 100 freestyle (43.74), Daryl Turner in taking first in the 100 butterfly (47.58) and Conner McHugh in placing second in the 200 breaststroke (1:58.75).

On the women's side, the Gophers also swept, beating Purdue 185-167 and Northwestern 231-122. Chantal Nack had a "B" cut in winning the 200 backstroke (1:59.16). Teammates Kierra Smith (2:11.98) and Lindsey Horejsi (2:44.95) both met the "B" standards in finishing 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke.

• The Gophers women's gymnastics team beat Ohio State 196.800-196.450 at the Sports Pavilion. Bailie Holst of Minnesota tied for first in the all-around (39.375) and won the vault (9.925) and the uneven parallel bars (9.925).

• The Gophers men's tennis team (5-0) edged Western Michigan 5-3 and Wisconsin-Green Bay 7-0 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
