You expect some records, like career marks, eventually will be broken. Then there are others, like a single-day performance, that catch you off guard.

Jack Sorenson of Lakeville South went the career route while Lauren Slayton of Farmington highlighted a record-setting performance by the school's gymnastics team.

Sorenson became the Cougars' all-time leading scorer in boys' basketball with 17 points in a 70-65 victory over Shakopee. Alex Richter held the previous mark with 1,995 points set in 2011.

"He had some pressure on him because everyone was expecting it to happen," Cougars coach Nick Gruhlke said. "Becoming the school's leading scorer is a great honor for Jack, but it doesn't surprise me that he did it."

The senior guard, who also owns the school's career records for assists and steals, has surpassed 2,000 points.

Meanwhile, Slayton broke Farmington's all-around record with a 37.425. She also improved her personal-best in all four events — balance beam (9.425), floor exercise (9.425), uneven parallel bars (9.15) and vault (9.425).

"Lauren is one of the hardest working athletes I've ever had the privilege of coaching," Tigers coach Amanda Lund said. "Lauren has this presence in gymnastics that literally stops a crowd in their place to watch her. She has such drive and determination that it is very visible to those around her."

The junior's performance helped the Tigers establish the team school record for points in a 144.55-140.55 victory over Eagan in a dual meet.
