When Chad Kagy picked up 15 X Games medals throughout 16 years of competition, the BMX rider often turned to a trusted trick — the tailwhip — and its many variations. The 38-year-old Kagy will be at U.S. Bank Stadium this weekend, but he won't be competing as he recovers from two broken heels suffered two years ago. We still learned from the third-most decorated BMX rider in X Games history.

Takeoff: When jumping over a gap, a rider must pick up full speed and "pop" upon takeoff. "You extend your legs and your arms at the same time to give yourself height off of the jump."

Activation: Once Kagy levels out his bike midair, he lifts both feet off the pedals. He rotates his arms in a circular motion to help the bike spin underneath him.

Completion: Kagy spots his landing, leaning forward and watching his pedals to ensure the bike is level. "You then push your hands forward to finish the last quarter of the rotation."

Landing: Once Kagy feels the bike on the inside of his leg, he straddles it with both feet pressing on the pedals to secure the landing. "You want to land roughly both tires at the same time."
