Julianna Gernes scored in the first minute of the second overtime to give the Gophers women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Nebraska on Wednesday night in Lincoln in its final regular-season game.

Gernes scored the goal after a long run by Kellie McGahn, who sent a cross to Molly Fiedler in the middle of the box. She flicked the ball to the right side of the net where Gernes was waiting. She delivered her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Kailee Sharp made two saves for the shutout. Nebraska outshot the Gophers 10-7, but Minnesota had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.

It was the first overtime game for Minnesota (11-4-3, 7-3-1) since Sept. 21 against Michigan. The Cornhuskers (9-5-5, 3-3-5) have lost their past two matches after an eight-match unbeaten streak (3-0-5).

With the win, the Gophers tied for second place in the Big Ten and got the third seed in the Big Ten tournament. They will host sixth-seeded Wisconsin at 1 p.m. Sunday. If it wins that quarterfinal, Minnesota would advance to the conference semifinals Nov. 3 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

Gophers coach Stefanie Golan has won at least 11 games in every season she has been at Minnesota, starting in 2012. The seven Big Ten wins is the second consecutive season the Gophers have reached that mark, which is a program first.
