Schierhorn set to tie U record

Gophers: No. 7 Minnesota lost to UMD 4-3 in overtime and defeated Union 2-0 last weekend at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Duluth. The Gophers' most productive line featured Casey Mittelstadt (two points), fellow freshman Scott Reedy (one) and sophomore Rem Pitlick (three). Eric Schierhorn, coming off a strong opening weekend, will start his 78th consecutive game in net Friday, matching a 51-year program record. John Lothrop started 78 in a row from 1964-66.

Penn State: No. 11 Penn State opened with a 2-1 loss at Clarkson and a 4-1 victory at St. Lawrence. Sophomore Peyton Jones stopped 49 of the 52 shots he faced. Denis Smirnov, a 5-10 sophomore from Russia, tallied three points after a strong freshman season (plus-24). The Nittany Lions lost all four regular season games against Minnesota last season, getting outscored 10-3 on the big sheet at Mariucci. But Penn State pulled off a 4-3, double-overtime win over the Gophers on Detroit's smaller rink, with Schierhorn making 59 saves in a losing effort.
