St. Paul educator and youth worker Kassim Busuri will serve as the interim Sixth Ward City Council member until the end of 2019, filling the seat vacated last year by Dan Bostrom.

Council members chose Busuri to represent the East Side ward after a public interview Wednesday. Busuri, who is education director at Minnesota Da'wah Institute and child care center director at Bright Start, was one of seven candidates seeking the position. Bostrom left the council in December after unexpectedly announcing his retirement.

As part of the interview process, candidates had to confirm that they do not plan to run for the Sixth Ward seat in November. The entire council is up for re-election this year.

Council members are expected to approve Busuri's appointment Jan. 23, and he will be sworn in Feb. 6.
