With $287.6B in revenue, UnitedHealth tops list of Minnesota public companies

Minnesota’s largest companies are bigger this year. The top five on the Star Tribune 50 each had double-digit revenue gains in 2021. As in past years, UnitedHealth Group dominates the field. Last year, its revenue grew 11.8% to $287.6 billion, accounting for 41% of the total revenue for all 50 of the largest public companies headquartered or operationally based in Minnesota. While UnitedHealth drives growth of the group as a whole, the list has strengthened with new additions in the past few years, as entrepreneurs in the state took advantage of a hot IPO market. New this year is Bright Health Group at No. 17, one of the highest debuts in the 31 years of the list. Life Time Group Holdings, at No. 30, returns to the list after going public for a second time. The growth in public companies means the list’s floor, which was revenue of $88.3 million in 2018, is now $233.4 million.

The Star Tribune 50 is a list of the largest publicly held companies in Minnesota, ranked by 2021 revenue. Numbers for companies that don’t have a Dec. 31 year-end are from the four quarters ending November, December, January or February. Another 30 companies were considered but their revenue was not high enough for the list. Data for the 50 largest companies also include each company’s net income before extraordinary items, assets and market capitalization as of May 10. Data for the list were taken from Refinitiv, Yahoo Finance, company news releases and Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

The list excludes public companies that do not trade on major exchanges; cooperatives; fraternal benefit organizations, and closely held companies, which usually do not disclose financial data. Companies that were delayed in filing year-end results were also excluded. Companies that have management headquarters in Minnesota, including Medtronic, Pentair and nVent Electric,cq are included.
