Nearly two months after his death, Prince has been awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the University of Minnesota .

President Eric Kaler said the award had been in the works "prior to his untimely death."

The Board of Regents awarded the music legend, who never went to college, with an honorary doctorate of humane letters Friday.

Prince was found dead April 21 at his home in Chanhassen from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, a powerful painkiller. He would have turned 58 this week.
