Authorities say an unattended candle was the cause of a Monday house fire that killed a 4-year-old western Wisconsin boy, the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office reported.

Jacetin Lucas Campeau, 4, of New Richmond, died from carbon monoxide poisoning after his family's house caught fire.

Family members, neighbors and first responders tried to rescue the child, who was trapped inside the burning home on the 1700 block of Margaret Street. They were unable to reach him due to the heat and flames, St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson said in a news release.

The family members are trying to raise money for a funeral, temporary housing and living expenses. They are also accepting clothing and household items listed on their GoFundMe page.

According to comments on the page set up by Mary Anderson, the aunt of Jacetin's mother, rescuers did "everything they could" to save the boy.

"There were neighbors, police and even the 2 younger sisters, Jayla & Joanna, ran into the burning house to try and save their baby brother," the posting said.

He is survived by his parents, Andrew Campeau and Samantha Richard, and three siblings, ages 13, 12 and 9. The family lost everything, Anderson wrote.

"RIP Jacetin," the page said. "We love you and will miss you so very much."

In the news release, Knudson said the community has been struck by the loss of four young lives in recent months, including an October crash that killed a 16-year-old girl.

"This 'ripple effect' touches so many in the community," Knudson wrote. "These include the same first responders that have assisted at each one of these scenes; and the school district, which continues to struggle with these events."
