Diggs said he would understand if Johnson reclaims his starting gig upon returning.
"I will accept my role just like I did before … and do whatever they need me to do," he said.
But with the way Diggs has stood out during his first two games in an otherwise spotty passing attack, it's hard to fathom the rookie not hanging on to a significant role.

Making an immediate impact The Vikings are finding many of their rookies finding success when called into action this season. These three had big games Sunday:
Danielle Hunter, DE
Starting against Kansas City in place of an ill Everson Griffen, he had half a sack and forced a fumble.
Stefon Diggs, WR
Had seven receptions for 129 yards in his second NFL game, including catching passes of 31 and 30 yards.
Eric Kendricks, MLB
Now the starting middle linebacker, he led all players with 10 tackles, nine solo, including a sack. Vikings rookie class of2015
First round (11th overall)
Trae Waynes, DB, Michigan State
Most of his play was on special teams until injuries opened the door on defense. On the field for 11 defensive plays Sunday. Second round (45th)
Eric Kendricks, MLB, UCLA
Trade of Gerald Hodges to 49ers opened door for Kendricks as an every-down middle linebacker. Had team-high 10 tackles Sunday, was on the field for 61 of 62 defensive snaps. Third round (88th)
Danielle Hunter, DE, LSU
Got his first start Sunday because Everson Griffen was sidelined. Played 50 snaps, doubling his workload over the first four games combined. Had half a sack and was credited with a forced fumble.
Fourth round (110th)
T.J. Clemmings, G, Pitt
Because of injuries, has been a starter from the first game of the season. Fifth round (143rd)
MyCole Pruitt, TE, Southern Illinois
An impressive preseason was halted by an injury. Has played in every game but has no receptions. Fifth round (146th)
Stefon Diggs, WR, Maryland
After three weeks inactive, has played the past two games. Has 13 catches for 216 yards. Played 57 of the 70 offensive snaps Sunday, best among the team’s receivers and running backs. Sixth round (185th)
Tyrus Thompson, OT, Oklahoma
Among the Vikings’ final cuts, now on Jacksonville’s practice squad.
