Fernstrum will be honored at the Minnesota Book Awards gala in April.

Writer, book designer and printer Wendy Fernstrum has been named the 2016 Minnesota Book Artist of the year for her work, "One is the Holiest Number (#2)," a traditional codex that explores the theme of an individual as both a sole being and part of a unified whole.

Fernstrum, 54, works out of her studio, Fernwerks, in Marine on St. Croix, where she also exhibits paintings, prints and artist books. Her work has been exhibited at the Minnesota Center for Book Art in Minneapolis, the Walker Art Center, and galleries elsewhere in the United States. She has been making artist books for more than 20 years.

An exhibit of her work will be on display Feb. 19-April 11 in the Cowles Literary Commons on the second floor of Open Book, 1011 Washington Av. S., in MInneapolis. The opening reception will be at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19.

Fernstrum will receive her award in April at the 29th annual Minnesota Book Awards celebration.
