What is the Bang 8?

July 17, 2016 at 3:41AM
Former San Diego coach Don Coryell, far right, conceived the Bang 8; Norv Turner, while at Dallas, implemented and helped Michael Irvin get into the Hall of Fame. (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

• It's a version of a 'skinny post' pass pattern. It was developed by Don Coryell, former head coach of the San Diego Chargers, and then Norv Turner with the Dallas Cowboys.

• It calls for the receiver to run 12 yards straight downfield before breaking inside at an angle.

• The receiver's job is to take whatever angle is necessary to ensure he is between the quarterback and nearest defender.

• "Bang'' indicates a rhythm throw as the QB hits the fifth step in his dropback. The "8'' is the number in the Air Coryell passing route tree.
