Fall approaches and brings with it the promise of superlative leaf-peeping in the northern part of our state. What else warms like the vibrant oranges and reds of changing leaves? The smooth pour of a craft beer, cider or spirit.
Lake Superior has long inspired brewers in Minnesota. In Duluth, this abundant natural resource has contributed to a rich history of brewing, one that spans generations, lasted through Prohibition, and has undergone a revival in the past few decades — and especially in the past eight years. Most of the establishments we've included here have opened since 2011, born into a tight-knit craft beverage scene marked by collaborations and joint ventures. From local cider aged in local whiskey barrels to local beer brewed with local coffee, these artisans have teamed up to make a good thing even better.
Taste for yourself. Here are 13 breweries, cideries and distilleries in Duluth and Two Harbors (plus a couple just over the border in Superior, Wis.) that prove the North Shore is a craft drinker's paradise.

Go if you love: A Lake Superior view.
What it's like: "When you're in Duluth, it's about the lake," said owner Rockie Kavajecz. If you share that opinion, one brewery offers Lake Superior views that can't be beat. Canal Park's lovely back patio has a direct sightline of the harbor, sits just off the Lakewalk for people-watching and stays open year-round (there's a firepit for chilly nights). Inside, you'll find a spacious dining room that's light-filled and family-friendly. Even indoors you'll feel like you're right on the shore. "Ships look like they're going to come steaming right through the window," said Kavajecz.
Unexpected treat: Solar panels line the roof, making this a uniquely sustainable operation.
