Gunfire claimed two lives overnight Friday in north Minneapolis, and police spent Saturday searching for clues and suspects.

The deaths, in apparently unrelated incidents, marked the city's 32nd and 33rd homicides of 2016, and the second and third such deaths in the space of just over two days.

About 11 p.m. Friday, a woman identified Saturday by relatives as Dana Logan, 46, of Minneapolis, was shot in her car near 36th and Queen avenues N. She was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where she died. According to scanner reports, she was shot in the chest.

On Saturday, relatives and strangers gathered at the spot where she was shot. A stuffed bear, balloons marked with her name and lit candles were placed there.

The victim's sister, Desonya Patterson, who was among those grieving at the scene, said Logan was recently married to Everett Logan, and that she had found her sister's wedding ring in the street.

Police have said little about the circumstances surrounding Logan's death. Patterson said her sister had just dropped off her grandniece when she was caught in crossfire from shooters who were on foot.

Logan didn't "bother anybody," Patterson said of her sister, whose photo she was clutching. She loved "casinos and bingo," she added. "Always took care of everybody."

Another sister of Logan, Jean Verna Patterson, said that although Logan had no children of her own, "she was like a mother to plenty of kids. … She interacted with them, was always taking them places and buying them stuff. They had a big heart for her."

Logan's death occurred only a few blocks away from the steakhouse where their father was shot to death in 2005, Desonya Patterson said.

Within an hour of Friday night's shooting, Desonya Patterson said, she was stopped by police for "obstructing the legal process," according to a citation she displayed Saturday. She said she was cited after stepping over yellow police tape while walking to the hospital to see her sister.

Area resident Tonya Magnan said she would like to see chaplains or counselors dispatched immediately to a homicide scene. "You're adding insult to injury" by issuing citations, she said. "See if you can help them [victims' loved ones]. Get a chaplain out here. Something."

On Saturday, two representatives of FreedomWorks, a post-prison ministry, offered condolences to Patterson and others who knew Logan.

Homicide investigator Sgt. Chris Thomsen, who was working in the area Saturday, said police need witnesses and for those with information to talk to them, something many are reluctant to do.

In the second overnight homicide, a man was found dead from a gunshot wound in a vehicle at 48th and Bryant avenues N. just after 5 a.m. Officers found him after responding to a report of someone slumped over inside a vehicle.

Police did not say whether the two shootings might have been related.

They also continued to investigate the fatal shooting of Michael Whitelaw, 50, found Thursday in his Harrison neighborhood apartment.

No one has been arrested in the three homicides. Anonymous tips can be texted to police at 847411 (TIP411). Enter MPD, a space, then the information. Tips also can be called in to 612-692-TIPS (8477).
