2 young men shot a block from the U; no arrests

Two young men were shot a block from the University of Minnesota late at night, and police are looking for those responsible.

The two showed up early Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and were treated for what Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder described as nonlife threatening wounds.

Police say the shooting occurred near Dinkytown at 14th Avenue and 6th Street SE., an area that officers were called to after receiving a report of shots heard about 2:20 a.m.

There was "evidence recovered at the scene," Elder said, declining to be more specific.

Police have not released the names of the victims, only saying that they are 22 and 19 years old. Nor have police released any description of whoever shot the only.

University officials issued a campuswide Neighborhood Safety Notice about the shooting early Wednesday afternoon.

Another option would have been for the U to issue what it calls a Timely Warning. School spokesman Evan Lapiska said that, in general, a warning is more likely when there is "some sort of suspect description — something the reader can act upon."
