Ford's versatile, capable, functional and roomy Taurus X SUV blends the aspirational looks of a sport-ute with the practicality of a minivan and the confidence of an all-wheel-drive sedan. Based on the outgoing Freestyle, Taurus X receives a host of new features, additional options, a new look and new power train for 2008.

The Ford crossover can carry up to seven adults in comfort. Available in SEL, Eddie Bauer and Limited models, the front-drive Taurus X is powered by a new Duratec 3.5L V-6 connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. A Haldex all-wheel-drive system is an available option, based on the unit used in the Volvo XC90 SUV.

On the road, the Taurus X is quiet, smooth and responsive. At speed, it drives like a midsize luxury sedan, with the optional all-wheel drive system providing commendable grip when things get nasty.

Starting with a stiff body structure as the foundation, enhancements include new reinforcements in the footwell area, designed to provide better crash protection, while side impact protection is improved with pressurized crash sensors in the doors and redesigned interior door panels. Standard electronic stability control provides precise handling in all weather conditions.

Inside the cabin, Taurus X features the look, feel and attitude of an off-road-ready SUV, complete with a grab handle on the passenger side. The flow-through center console houses the floor shifter, two cup holders and a handy storage area.

With best-in-class legroom for the second and third rows, the Taurus X features reclining captain's chairs or a 60/40 split-fold seatback for added comfort. Upscale models offer second row optional seating on adjustable tracks to increase legroom. The third-row seating features fully functional, fold-in-floor seating.

Safety features abound, including dual front airbags, three-row side-curtain airbags with rollover sensor, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, alarm system, remote keyless entry, SecuriLock passive anti-theft system, tire pressure monitoring system, traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock and fog lights.
