One man said he and his buddy saw a 5-year-old girl in the back seat when they stole a pickup truck that had been left running in a liquor store parking lot. The other said they didn't know she was there until she woke up and screamed, court documents said.

Derrick L. Tallman, 28, is charged with false imprisonment and motor vehicle theft in connection with an incident May 30 in St. Paul. His co-defendant, Dominic Jaworski, 22, was charged with the same counts last week.

According to the criminal complaint filed Thursday in Ramsey County District Court, the defendants spotted the Ford F-150 in the parking lot of the Liquor Barrel on W. 7th Street and decided to steal it and sell it to Tallman's cousin. According to Tallman, the men saw the girl as they got inside the truck.

Tallman said Jaworski hopped in the driver's seat and sped off; Jaworski said Tallman was the driver.

Both said they drove about 5 miles before dropping the girl off with a group of people in a yard at Hwy. 61 and Birmingham Street. The child was crying but otherwise unharmed.

The group held Jaworski until police arrived, but the other man escaped. Tallman was arrested Tuesday. According to the complaint, Tallman pleaded guilty May 28 in Ramsey County to motor vehicle theft in another case and was conditionally released until his sentencing July 23.
