40 years ago Saturday, Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches in a game

Good times

A tweet from Jonah Keri, and subsequent link to a piece he wrote on it four years ago, alerts us to the fact that Saturday is the 40-year anniversary of a game that would cause Twins PBP voice Dick Bremer to completely lose his mind if it happened today.

To be fair, we would all think it was crazy.

Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches over 13 innings for the Angels against the Red Sox. Luis Tiant of Boston pitched into the 15th inning, where the Angels finally won 4-3. He was the complete game loser in a game that went into the 15th inning.

Let that all sink in.

Here's the box score, which does not include pitch counts but does have a play by play and any other facts you could want. When a starter throws half as many pitches as Ryan does nowadays, we blink.

Can you even imagine 235 pitches?
