A night to savor

Meritage' first BYOB Noght is a can't-miss proposition.

There are some local wine events that I sorta kinda wish I could attend, some that I am truly bummed if I miss them and a scant few that I move heaven and Earth to make sure I'm there.

Next week's BYOB Night at Meritage is one of those occasions. This Bring Your Own Bottle event affords us a chance not only to pull out some cool bottles and avoid corkage, but to sample some of the very best food in these parts.

Meritage is one of my two favorite restaurants in town (along with Restaurant Alma). Russell Klein has got it going on big-time in the kitchen, Desta Maree Klein is a swell hostess, and Nicolas Giraud has crafted a superlative wine list.

I'm always happy to order off Giraud's list, but the chance to try a few gems from the cellars (my own and some friends') along with a four-course Klein tasting menu for just $55 (plus tax and tip) is simply a no-brainer.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 24; for reservations call 651-222-5670 or email reservations@meritage-stpaul.com.

And if my being there is any sort of deterrent , hey, ask for a table on the other side of the room.
