Architect/client: Scott Wende of Lunning Wende Associates, St. Paul.

Location: South Minneapolis.

Contractor: Thompson Homes, Orono.

Indoor living space: 750 square feet.

Outdoor living space: 430 square feet.

COST

Remodeling: $40,250 (includes reconstructing the ceiling, refinishing the floors, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, skylights, new furnace and water heater). $67 per square foot.

Addition: $50,000; $333 per square foot.

Deck and outdoor dining enclosure: $12,260; $28.50 per square foot.

ECO-FRIENDLY FEATURES

• Improved daylighting with placement of new windows and skylight.

• Removable canvas awnings over the deck to cool the home.

• Energy-efficient kitchen appliances.

• Burned the firewood from the dead maple tree to help heat the house.

• Cedar and fiber-cement siding.

• Energy-efficient water heater and furnace.

• Ceiling fan recirculates air.

• Ceiling insulation surpasses code.

• Low-VOC paints and finishes.

• Reclaimed quarried limestone for walkway and wall.

• Native plant landscaping.
