History: Alliant Techsystems was formed in 1990 when Honeywell spun off its defense business. The former Honeywell business had supplied defense products and systems to the U.S. for 50 years. In 1999, Honeywell was acquired by AlliedSignal. Although the company retained the Honeywell name, it moved to the Morristown, N.J., headquarters of AlliedSignal.

Annual revenue: $4.8 billion with 68 percent of its sales, or $3.3 billion, to U.S. government customers.

ST100 rank: Alliant ranked No. 17 among Minnesota's 100 largest public companies by revenue in the Star Tribune's May ranking.

New neighbors: Alliant will find plenty of defense contractors nearby. In August, Northrop Grumman Corp. moved its headquarters from Century City, Calif., to Falls Church, Va. Others with headquarters nearby include General Dynamics Corp. and Computer Sciences Corp., both of Falls Church, Va.; Science Applications International Corp., McLean, Va., and Lockheed Martin Corp. and BAE Systems Inc., both of Bethesda, Md.
